Okanagan-Shuswap: Snowfall warning in effect

Environment Canada is forecasting cold and snow ahead

Environment Canada’s prediction for snow came true and some Okanagan Shuswap cities are being warned that a lot more is to come. So don your knit cap and make the best of it. There’s less than a month until spring.

First thing’s first, today’s forecast courtesy of Environment Canada:

In Penticton there is a snowfall warning with about 10 centimetres expected to hit.

Periods of snow will continue this morning as bands move up from the south. The snow will end this afternoon as the weather system moves to the east.

In Kelowna there is a snowfall warning in effect for about 10 centimetres. Periods of snow will continue this morning as bands move up from the south. The snow will end this afternoon as the system moves to the east.

In Salmon Arm it will be mainly cloudy with 60 per cent chance of flurries. The high will be -3 C.

In Vernon about two to four centimetres should fall and the high temperature is -3 C.

There’s also a dust warning.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, in collaboration with the Interior Health Authority, has issued a Dust Advisory for Vernon due to high concentrations of coarse particulates, which are expected to persist until there is a change in current weather conditions.

Persons with chronic underlying medical conditions should postpone strenuous exercise until the advisory is lifted. Staying indoors and in air-conditioned spaces helps to reduce particulate exposure. Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have diabetes, and lung or heart disease.

Tonight: The nighttime low around the valley expected to average around -12 C.

Will the sun come out tomorrow?: Nope. There’s a 40 per cent chance of flurries and loads of cloud.

On the roads:. There’s a snowfall warning in effect for Highway 3, from Hope to Princeton via Allison Pass.

About 10 to 15 centimetres is expected to fall this morning as bands move up from the south. The snow will end this afternoon as the weather system moves to the east.

Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions.

Crews are still working to clear the rock slide on Highway 97, but the road at the site remains closed and a detour is still in place.

Steve Sirett, district manager, transportation with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, said the ministry now expects to have the highway open early next week.

The Callan Road detour remains open.

Fun fact:

Did you know British Columbia is the third largest and most westerly province in Canada and it is four times the size of Great Britain. The length of BC’s coastline is over 27,000 kilometres. 2. Half of all British Columbians live in the metropolitan area of Vancouver.
