South Shore Cabinetry is touting gold and silver — and lots of it — following the 25th annual CARE Awards ceremony in Victoria last weekend.

The CARE (Construction Achievements and Renovations of Excellence) Awards recognize west coast creative design and craftsmanship in the residential building industry. The gala and ceremony were held Oct. 1 with prizes given out in such categories as best home design, best traditional kitchen, best master suite and best media room, to name just a few.

South Shore Cabinetry, which has locations in both Victoria and Lake Cowichan, was nominated for 14 awards. The company received 13 silver medal placings and one gold medal for best contemporary bathroom over 130 square feet.

“We ran into some really stiff competition,” said owner and president Roy Sandsmark.

“It was a very special year in the sense that there were some very distinguished and special projects that were also done at the same time, so I’m pleased we won what we did and were able to compete.”

The bathroom design that earned South Shore Cabinetry its gold received points for the room’s aesthetics, balance, uniformity and the “airiness” of it. Their design created the appearance of weightlessness in the room through the use of lighting effects and by having the cabinetry suspended.

Sandsmark said he hopes awards like these will send a message to customers from all around Vancouver Island.

“[We’re] trying to get Lake Cowichan on the map. We’re about to build this new facility here and I want to draw clientele from Victoria, Nanaimo, that whole area into our area here, to see our product and have them want to come as a destination for high-end cabinetry,” he said.

The new, larger facility will start to take shape in the new year, with digging on the site next door to South Shore Cabinetry’s location beginning in January. The current space will be merged with the new development.
