When the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay passes through Summerland this spring, organizers will have a special celebration in place.

The relay, marking the 25th anniversary of Hansen’s Man in Motion tour, will be in Summerland on May 2.

The community will be the last stop that day.

Joanne Malar, the organizer of the event in Summerland, said the medal carriers for Summerland’s portion of the relay have already been selected.

The deadline for applicants was the end of December.

“Now we’re planning the actual event,” she said.

Malar expects strong participation from the community.

“Summerland’s always had great response to local events,” she said. “We would really like to share our spirit for this event.”

The relay is expected to be at Dale Meadows Sports Complex on Tuesday, May 2 at 6 p.m.

The relay marks the anniversary of Hansen’s original world tour, from 1985 to 1987, which was held to raise money for spinal cord research, rehabilitation and sport.

The anniversary relay covers the Canadian portion of the 34-country tour.
