Our Place breakfast program continues despite no grant renewals

The money has run out, but Our Place Society will draw from reserves and other budget “maneuvering” to continue its breakfast program, with fingers crossed.

The society’s board has launched two mailing campaigns, targeting selected postal codes and past donors, with a renewed appeal for support.

“We are quite hopeful that the funds are going to come in,” said Don Storch, society chair.

“We know the breakfast program is a very important part for people. The long-term goal of Our Place is we want to be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week.”

The breakfast program, running from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday to Friday, was launched as a pilot program. It was funded by the four-core municipalities, the Ministry of Housing and United Way.

The one-time funding dried up March 30.

The society is waiting on the new provincial budget launch to learn whether Premier Christy Clark’s government will fund the additional morning hours.
