Three students from the Outdoor Education Program at the Burton Academy School (BAS) recently travelled to Pasco, Washingtonfor the sixteenth annual Enterprise Week.
Over 1,000 students attended the event, which focuses on business development. Groups were formed into16-17 person teamsto work on financial skills, business plans, and marketing skills. The groups shared their work at a final competition.
Outdoor Education instructor Dorian Boswell was invited to be the keynote speaker at the Enterprise Week Conference.
The students from BAS did a half an hour presentation in front of about 850 of the students in attendance, which went over verywell.
NSS teacher wins Stewards of the Future award
Julia Flessaker has won a grant for her Grade 11/12 Environmental Science class’ research into water quality and stewardship.
The Stewards of the future program recognizes secondary school classes working to preserve and study biodiversity and getoutside in the environment as they learn.
Throughout autumn, Flessaker’s Grade 11/12 class, along with a few Grade 8 students, have gone on field studies trips, testingwater and learning about the environment in a range of locations between the Cody Caves and the Nakusp Hot Springs.
New physical education teacher has come to NSS
School District 10 welcomes Paul Wright to Nakusp Secondary School, who started teaching at the school on Dec. 5. Wright willbe moving to Nakusp with his family.
Students, teachers, and parents invited to take part in Rural Engagement Strategy Survey
The survey is found online, through the Ministry of Education. The ministry is actively seeking input on rural education, and areport using this information and other focused conversations will be prepared by the end of June 2017.

Maker Day/Skills Exploration Day set for Jan. 4, 2017
The first district Maker Day has been set for the beginning of the new year, and will be facilitated by Dr. Susan Crichton, thedirector of the Innovative Learning Centre at UBC-Okanagan. Crichton is a former teacher in School District 10.
Grade 7 students from Edgewood Elementary School, and Lucerne Elementary Secondary School in New Denver will attend, alongwith students form Grades 8-12 from Nakusp Secondary School.
The students will learn about trades and technology careers, and engage in design thinking, human-centered design, and willcreate prototypes and solutions to real world problems.
