Fire crews responded to a fire at a Wheel Avenue shop around 1 a.m. last night.

When crews arrived to the scene off Townline Road in west Abbotsford, they found heavy black smoke coming from the unit.

Assistant fire chief Craig Bird said a semi-truck inside the shop was fully involved when crews arrived. They were able to get the fire under control and stop it from spreading to nearby suites.

“Crews did a fantastic job,” Bird said.

He said an alarm system alerted the building’s owners who then called 911. The fire would have likely spread more were it not for that system, Bird said.

He said there’s heavy smoke and water damage to the unit, as well as smoke damage to three surrounding units.
