In a two-minute meeting held July 11, White Rock council gave unanimous support to awarding a contract for the work to Martens Ashphalt Ltd.

Valued at $268,811 excluding HST, the project is “to provide a safe environment for the foot traffic generated by the side streets that connect to the west side of Oxford Street from Thrift Avenue north to Vine Avenue,” notes a staff report.

According to the report, the need for the work was identified in the city’s 2006 Strategic Transportation Plan. It is to include removal of the existing grass boulevard, reconstruction of the road base to the edge of the existing asphalt and installation of a new curb and gutter, sidewalk, boulevard and street lighting; as well, reconstruction of driveways, cross-street connections, bus stops and crosswalks.

Eight bids were received, ranging up to $342,320. Martens’ was the lowest. The work is expected to take eight weeks.
