Exploring Chilliwack waterways by canoe or kayak during spring freshet could provide a whole new perspective on the local slough system.
Friends of the Camp/Hope Slough present the 2021 Paddle the Slough Challenge, May 15 to June 20, with Watershed Watch Salmon Society.
“This year it’s a self-guided tour of four Chilliwack blueways,” said Roxanna Froese, engagement manager with Watershed Watch.
The goal of the paddling event is to raise awareness about the need for long-term slough revitalization, and recognizing City of Chilliwack’s blueways project, Froese said.
“The City of Chilliwack rarely gets positive feedback so this is a time to flood them with how happy we are when they support recreational paddlers and that they consider projects that protect and restore our sloughs.”
There are also some prizes to be won for paddlers who register for the challenge. Maps and safety updates will be available through the Eventbrite link posted on the Friends’ page.
Each completed leg of the challenge can be recorded for posterity, and to win potential prizes, by snapping photos of the paddling experience, and sending to engagement@watershedwatch.ca
The paddling routes will include Hope River, Camp River, Nelson Slough and Bear Slough/Westcamp Slough.
This year they’re doing things a little differently to ensure the event is pandemic-safe by making the event spread out over six weeks. For more details email engagement@watershedwatch.ca
