Park your bike for free one last time at Party in the Park

A valet service has been offered by Cycle Chilliwack volunteers from a Mill Street location

Some may hesitate to bring their bikes downtown because of talk of the rampant thieving going on in Chilliwack.

But there is a worry-free way to keep your bike safe if you plan to attend Party in the Park on Friday night.

Cycle Chilliwack volunteers have been quietly hosting a free “bike valet” service during the past three events, co-chair David Swankey said.

“We think it’s being well received,” Swankey said.

The group is feeling encouraged by the fact that cyclists of all ages and different demographics are showing up to park their bikes. Each of the three PITP nights, about 20 to 25 bikes have been left in their care.

“I love it that kids are coming out and their parents are not worried the bikes will be stolen. It frees up everyone to enjoy what Party in the Park should be all about,” Swankey said.

They’re also using the chance to talk to bike owners about Project 529 Garage registration, which is an anti-bike theft registry and app.

Several of those who advantage of the valet service, signed up to Project 529.

Overall the experience of the bike valet service is in keeping with group’s purpose, Swankey added, promoting cycling, having conversations about cycling in the city, and talking about the bike lane infrastructure, and more.

“It’s been an opportunity to reach out a little,” he said.

They’re at it again one last time, on Friday, July 27. The bike valet service is at 9340-B Mill Street.
