A man responsible for damaging and breaking into parking meters in downtown Vernon in the fall has been given jail time for his actions.

Mitchell Ronald Szekely, born in 1981, was sentenced to 20 days in jail, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of $100 and will be placed on a year’s probation upon his release from custody on a charge of mischief.

Counts of possessing a breaking instrument for a coin device and theft under $5,000 were stayed.

Szekely was arrested in December after he was caught by RCMP breaking into a parking meter on Centennial Drive at 35th Street.

More than 100 meters were broken into over several weeks with the total cost of the damage being higher than $20,000.

RCMP said it was unlikely Szekely was solely responsible for all of the damaged meters.

Szekely is currently in custody on an unrelated matter, and the 20 days will be added to his current sentence.
