Residents of Armstrong and Spallumcheen enjoy their recreation.
Armstrong Spallumcheen Parks and Recreation has released its 2016 figures which show a surplus of more than $63,400.
“This includes overages due to the culvert project and accounting for the new cold-water flooding system (at Nor-Val Sports Centre),” said Lars Larsen, parks and recreation manager, in a report to Armstrong council.
Revenues in 2016 were up $33,419, including a revenue increase from the Armstrong Safe Hockey League (ASHL) of nearly $4,700.
Expenses were more than $30,000 under budget due in part to savings in production utilities and in operational efficiencies with the ASHL.
Larsen said the new storm drain project that is running from the corner of Pleasant Valley Road through the Interior Provincial Exhibition grounds to Wood Avenue is proceeding.
“The drain is in the ground and covered,” he said. “The remainder of the work will happen in the spring.”
Some $36,000 for additional project work has been added to the 2017 budget.
Programs for 2017 through parks and recreation are off to a great start.
A total of 247 program registrations for winter programs have been received, which is up from 219 in the winter of 2016, and there are 28 more participants thus far.
Events like archery, home school physical education, pickle ball, fitness programs and I Play Hockey all show increased numbers from 2016. Ten people have signed up for a baby sitting program which did not run a year ago.
“Registrations are strong,” said Larsen. “Gym memberships continue to come in, particularly with the new year and resolutions.”
The association’s spring/summer program brochure will be out March 1.
The pool at Memorial Park is slated to open May 15.
“We want it to be ready to go and issue-free for the May long weekend,” said Larsen.
