The newest entry into Parksville’s public park inventory will celebrate a kickoff fundraising event Saturday, June 24.
Shelly Park, located at the corner of Shelly Road and Turner Road in Parksville, was approved by council in May following a presentation in March by the Pioneer Crescent Neighbourhood Residents Association and the Bard to Broadway Theatre Society, which manages a building on the property — now called the Shelly Park Centre — on behalf of the city.
As part of the agreement to establish the open grass area as a community park, the PCNRA agreed to raise funds for park improvements. The city included a basic annual maintenance expense, not to exceed $10,000, in its budget in May.
The Pioneer Crescent Neighbourhood Residents Association invites all residents to a BBQ and kickoff to the fundraising initiative from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The event will provide an opportunity to learn about the plans for the new park and view the concept plans. The Shelly Park Centre will be open for tours during the kickoff.
While supplies lasts; hot dogs, chicken and soft drinks will be available. Potluck dishes are welcome but not necessary. ; Some chairs and tables will be provided, but guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair if possible.
