Summer Kicks will come full circle for its final performance when the Parson Jazz Cooperative wraps up the summer series Aug. 19.
The band, which has existed in some form or another for over 10 years, will be playing jazz, funk and R&B tunes to close out the music festival.
Brian Comrie, one of the members for the band who is also a part of the Usual Suspects, the band that opened Summer Kicks, says the jazz group is looking forward to having fun and bringing their music to the people of Golden.
“The bands and the people in the street have so much fun at these, which is what it’s all about,” said Comrie, whose taken to the streets of Golden to enjoy Summer Kicks when he’s not performing.
“I hope people come out, especially if you haven’t come out yet, because it’s a unique thing that you won’t see anywhere else or anytime else.”
The band will be playing some classic jazz standards, while also throwing in some covers of modern songs with their own style and jazzy twist.
Comrie says that most of the songs will be recognizable, reworked to fit their style.
Concert goers can expect everything from Frank Sinatra to the Beatles, with All of my Lovin, Deed I Do and Green Eyes on the set list.
Comrie says its a testament to the music community in Golden that the band has been able to exist and evolved over time.
“One day you’re getting together and just playing for fun and then suddenly people want to book you to play,” said Comrie.
“If you go to any other town with a population of just under 4,000 and they’ll be nothing, it’s kind of amazing to find all this music in a dinky little town like Golden.”
The band has five members with Comrie on bass guitar, Carrie White as the vocalist, Jeff and Joan Dolinsky on saxophone and keys and trumpet respectively, and Steve Benty on the drums.
Over the years, they’ve developed a mini horn section, which helps them deliver bombastic jazz performances that are sure to please and entertain the crowd.
It won’t be the first time the band has taken on Summer Kicks.
They were one of the “tweener” bands that performed during last year’s series which featured touring acts instead of locals as the main focus.
The performance will take place in the Clown Park neighbourhood between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m., with the planned route set to be released on the Kicking Horse Culture Facebook page closer to the concert date.
