Newly-elected board chair Paul McManus (left) and vice-chair Walt Krahn share a light moment in their new roles at Tuesday’s board meeting in Chilliwack.

School board trustee Paul McManus was voted in as board chair, and Walt Krahn as vice chair, at Tuesday night’s election meeting.

McManus was nominated for chair by Trustee Bob Patterson, and elected by ballot.

Trustee Silvia Dyck, who had served as board chair for the past two years had also been nominated, by Trustee Dan Coulter.

The positions are for a one-year term, with the board holding elections at the last meeting of the calendar year. The changes take place immediately.

“It’s an intimidating opportunity for me, but I’m looking forward to it,” McManus said. He thanked Dyck and Coulter for their service to the school community.

There were also two nominations for vice chair. Trustee Barry Neufeld nominated Coulter, who was the current vice chair, and Krahn was nominated by Trustee Heather Maahs.

The school board also voted unanimously to move a scheduled board meeting back a day next year. The meeting was set for May 9, but since that day is set for provincial elections, Krahn made a motion to move the meeting to May 8.

He said he knew the board would be interested in “being actively involved in watching the results.”

The board agreed and voted in favour. The next meeting of the school year will be Jan. 10.
