With a location, a schedule and a budget planned out, the District of Peachland is looking for local input to help create the design for a new skate park.
An open house and information session will take place at Peachland Community Centre June 20 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
“There has been a decision that the skate park will be installed in Lambley Park, so there’s going to be information about how that selection process came about,” said Cheryl Weibe, director of communication services for the District of Peachland.
“There’s also going to be a public consultation portion. The purpose of it is really about design; however, we’re not limiting it. If people have comments or things that they feel we need to know, we certainly will accept feedback on those things as well.”
The district completed its Recreation Master Plan in 2009. Although a skate park was not identified as a top priority, it was one of the top choices from the community in terms of additional amenities.
“We’ve had two presentations this year to council, one by a group of students from Mount Boucherie Senior Secondary and one from a group of students at Peachland Elementary School. The skate park came out in those discussions.”
Construction on the 5,000-square-foot park is planned to begin this fall; the grand opening of the facility is scheduled for the summer of 2013.
The area will accommodate skateboards, in-line skates and BMX bikes.
The project is being funded entirely from the community amenities fund, which is money provided by the development community to make improvements in public services.
According to Mayor Keith Fielding, a committee is being assembled to help with the design process.
“In order to ensure the new skate park will be built with our local youth and residents in mind, we are recruiting a committee of interested youth and community members to work directly with New Line Skateparks Inc. and district staff on the design,” said Fielding.
