Federal, provincial and municipal government representatives will join the Peachland Boys and Girls Club, the Peachland Chamber of Commerce and Peachland Visitor Centre Saturday to commemorate the opening of Peachland Historic Primary School.
In 2009 the District of Peachland committed to keep and restore the historic primary school for community use.
Saturday’s event will give members of the public the chance to tour the renovated site while enjoying cake and refreshments.
“I am pleased to see the Peachland Historic Primary School transformed into a multi-use community hub,” said Dan Albas, MP for Okanagan-Coquihalla.
“By making investments in community facilities such as this one, we are helping to boost economic activity and maintain a high quality of life for residents in Peachland.”
Funding for the project came through several avenues. A total of $400,000 came from the province’s Community Recreation Program; $200,000 came from the District of Peachland; $52,700 came from the federal government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund; $49,857 came from the federal government’s Enabling Accessibility Fund; $20,000 came from the province’s Job Creation Partnership.
“The transformation of this building from a derelict, boarded-up eyesore to a magnificent new community facility has been an amazing accomplishment,” said Peachland Mayor Keith Fielding.
“We now have space from which the Boys and Girls Club can deliver programs for children and youth, the Visitor Centre can showcase Peachland, local artists can exhibit their work, community groups can access meeting space and the extraordinary bat colony that inhabits the attic can continue to call it their home.”
Saturday’s ribbon cutting event takes place from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at the Peachland Historic Primary School (5684 Beach Ave.).
