Pedestrian killed on Pat Bay Highway

A pedestrian dressed in dark clothing died on Highway 17 Saturday morning.

Sidney North Saanich RCMP officers were already responding to earlier 9-1-1 calls of a man walking “in the middle of the highway” when multiple 9-1-1 calls came in of a man struck by a car shortly after 5 a.m. on March 19.

The pedestrian was wearing dark coloured clothes including a dark jacket and a hood when the driver came upon him standing in the southbound passing lane and was unable to avoid the collision, police said.

The man, a Saanich resident, died on the scene — south of McDonald Park Road on the Pat Bay Highway. His name is not being released.

“Traffic was diverted for a few hours and the road was closed,” said Sgt. Wayne Conley, of the Sidney North Saanich RCMP.

The investigation is ongoing with the coroner office, collision analyst’s examination, and witness interviews.

Anyone who witnessed the crash and has not spoken with police can call the detachment at 250-656-3931.
