A 26-year-old Vancouver man is in hospital with serious injuries.

A 26-year-old Vancouver man is in hospital with serious injuries after being struck Thursday night by a semi-truck on Highway 97 in Kelowna between Leathead and McCurdy Roads.

The accident happened at about 6:20 p.m. Police say a Freightliner semi was stopped at the light at the intersection with 97 and McCurdy and began to accelerate southbound once the light turned green.

About 100 metres from the next intersection at 97 and McCurdy, the truck impacted a pedestrian in the outside lane.

According to witnesses, the truck was travelling at an estimated 30 km/h and the pedestrian appeared to jump in front of the vehicle. The Vancouver man was thrown more than five metres from the impact and was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. He remains in critical condition.

The 54-year-old driver from Chilliwack was physically uninjured in the crash but certainly emotionally distraught.

The investigation is ongoing.
