Pedestrian struck by vehicle in West Kelowna

Elderly Williams Lake resident hit by car while crossing Highway 97 and at Daimler Road.

A 90-year-old Williams Lake suffered serious injuries Wednesday afternoon after being hit by a car while crossing Highway 97 at Daimler Road.

The pedestrian collision occurred at 3:24 p.m., as witnesses told police the  90-year-old man was attempting to cross the highway against a red light when he was struck by a southbound Hyundai, driven by a 50-year-old West Kelowna woman.

Police say the investigation suggests that the driver was proceeding on a green light in the right-hand lane when the collision occurred and was unable to see the man until it was too late.

The elderly pedestrian suffered significant, serious non-life threatening injuries in the crash. He was taken to Kelowna General Hospital in stable condition.

No charges have been laid against the driver, nor are any anticipated.

Police remind pedestrians to always obey crosswalk signals for their own safety.
