Residents near Evergreen Drive are being told not to panic if they see smoke.
The City of Penticton’s fire department is advising residents near Evergreen Drive that a burn permit has been issued to Bluffs at Skaha GP Inc. to dispose of vegetation that was cleared last year.
“The issuing of this permit will enable this new development to meet the requirements and eventual certification of FireSmart Canada,” said Penticton fire prevention officer, Captain Mike Richards.
“The FireSmart Canada Community Recognition Program is designed to limit and mitigate the risk of a wildfire spreading to the development. The Bluffs at Skaha development has fully co-operated with these conditions and is committed to building a FireSmart Community.”
A managed open-air burning plan has been put in place under the City of Penticton fire and life safety bylaw and the B.C. open burning smoke control regulation.
Both of these regulations allow for open-air burning under strict conditions that limit the effect on air quality while allowing the vegetation debris to be removed.
Property owners in the area have been notified of the burn by the city.
Burning will occur through April 15.
