Opposition is growing to Lavington’s proposed wood pellet plant.
A petition against the plant, a joint venture between Tolko Industries and Pinnacle Renewable Energy, has gained upwards of 100 signatures.
“We have been getting some great response,” said Stephanie Hoffman, a Lavington resident who is concerned about the contaminate discharge from the facility.
Hoffman is hoping to present the petition to the District of Coldstream during its regular council meeting scheduled for Monday at 6 p.m.
That is when a zoning bylaw to accommodate the plant could be given final approval.
“There is also a ‘Lavington Pellet Plant discussion page’ started on Facebook by another community member,” said Hoffman.
“People can access the link to change.org there as well as download the petition directly if they would like to get signatures from concerned residents in their area.”
The Ministry of Transportation has already given its approval to the plant, which will double rail traffic and increase truck traffic by four per day.
But Ministry of Environment approval is still needed and Hoffman plans to send the petition to the ministry, as well as Premier Christy Clark and Pinnacle.
Those with concerns also have until Aug. 2 to get their written comments to the Environment Protection Officer, Authorizations Southern Interior Region (Cariboo office) Environment Protection Division, Ministry of Environment 400 – 640 Borland Street, Williams Lake, B.C. V2G 4TI.
