Phony fund raising

The South Okanagan Similkameen chapter of the United Way reports that perpetrators are going door to door asking for donations

The South Okanagan Similkameen chapter of the United Way reports that perpetrators are going door to door in the Shuswap and Vernon areas asking for donations for the United Way.

The funds are being collected using handheld debit machines and donors are sometimes being offered Tim Horton’s gift cards as a “reward” for donating.

Although there are no reports of this happening in the South Okanagan and Similkameen, the United Way in our region wants to remind the public that it does not canvass door to door. Nor do we do not offer rewards to donors or use hand held card readers.

If you are approached to give at your door please decline and contact the RCMP immediately. If you have been victimized please contact your bank to report the transactions and contact your local RCMP at the following non-emergency numbers:

Penticton Kaleden and Okanagan Falls: 250-492-4300 Oliver: 250-498-3433 and Osoyoos: 250-495 7236.

In the Similkameen:Keremeos: 250-499-5511; Princeton: 250-295-6911.
