Driver fined $121 for knocking over Mackenzie Avenue street lamp; no word if they'll have to pay for lamp.

In one of those great “What the H?” moments, a driver managed to get up on the sidewalk and knock over one of Mackenzie Avenue’s classic street lamps outside the Village Idiot on Saturday.

According to a server at the Idiot, the driver was making a U-turn when they hit the lamp. The impact knocked it over and caused it to shatter into many pieces.

RCMP issued the driver a $121 ticket for making an unsafe U-turn. The driver also agreed to compensate the owner of the bicycle for the damage.

Fortunately, no one was hurt.

UPDATE: Looks like the driver (or their insurer) will be paying to replace the lightstand. Mike Thomas, the city’s director of engineering, had this to say:

“I only have a really rough estimate, but because the concrete base (and bolts) were damaged it will likely be over $10,000 for the whole replacement, plus costs of the call out on Saturday night.

The driver will be responsible for paying.”
