19-year-old driver also taken to hospital, child was not wearing a seatbelt

A two-year-old child was airlifted to hospital Wednesday evening after a single-vehicle crash in the Murrayville neighbourhood.

Emergency crews were dispatched around 8:45 p.m. to the scene in the 21900 block of 56 Avenue, said Dale Steeple, assistant fire chief with the Township of Langley.

Firefighters first on scene discovered the child without a pulse; they extricated the young patient while starting CPR in the vehicle, according to an individual familiar with the incident.

Crew members transferred the boy over to the care of paramedics after re-initiating a pulse, they added.

The vehicle drifted off the road and into a ditch, striking a culvert, said Cpl. Holly Largy, media relations officer with Langley RCMP.

The two-year-old boy was not wearing a seatbelt, Largy added. Behind the wheel was a 19-year-old woman.

“Impairment and speed are not believed to be factors,” Largy said.

A witness at the scene described paramedics transporting the child to Langley Regional Airport, where he was airlifted to BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.

Six paramedic crews were dispatched to the scene, five ground and one air ambulance, said Sarah Morris, media relations person with BC Emergency Health Services.

“One patient was air lifted to hospital in serious condition,” said Morris. “One patient was transported by ground ambulance to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.”

The stretch of road was closed to vehicle traffic for several hours while RCMP investigated the scene. Langley Criminal Collision Investigation Team has taken over the case.

The investigation is ongoing.
