Pickleball proposal generating concerns

A resident is oncerned about pickleball courts possibly being established at Marshall Field.

The prospect of pickleball is making a racket in a Vernon neighbourhood.

Greater Vernon Advisory Committee directors heard Thursday from resident Larry Nikoloyuk, who is concerned about pickleball courts possibly being established at Marshall Field.

“I understand there’s a lot of noise with this and there’s nothing to buffer the noise from me,”  said Nikoloyuk, who lives nearby.

“It will be really bothersome.”

Beyond noise, Nikoloyuk is concerned about dust from the park’s gravel parking lot.

“Maybe you can pave the parking lot if you are thinking of expanding it,” he said.

Marshall Field is being considered for pickleball courts because the sport has raised issues in other neighbourhoods where it is played.

Nikoloyuk insists he should be taken seriously by GVAC.

“I am only one home but I am a taxpayer,” he said.

A process that could lead to pickleball courts is currently underway.

“We are trying to work with the user groups to balance their interests with the public’s interests financially and from a service perspective,” said David Sewell, Regional District of North Okanagan chief administrative officer.

Dust control options for the parking lot could be considered.

“It’s a big area so it would be expensive to pave,” said Juliette Cunningham, GVAC chairperson.
