A chance to get on board with breast health is rolling into Vernon and Armstrong.
The Pink Tour Bus, a Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation education centre on wheels, stops at the Village Green Centre, in front of Zellers, today from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The bus then rolls into the Interior Provincial Exhibition and Stampede Saturday.
Since the tour hit the road in early May 2011, close to 15,000 people have been through the signature covered bus and more than 711 have signed up on the bus to arrange a mammogram.
The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, B.C./Yukon Region launched BC’s first mammography and breast health education centre on wheels – a branded bus that will visit more than 50 BC communities in less than five months.
Tour staff guide visitors through the interactive displays and encourage women between 40 and 79 to book a free mammogram in their communities.
Only 51 per cent of eligible women in B.C. have a regular mammogram.
“Research from the World Health Organization tells us that if all eligible women went for their mammograms we could reduce the number of deaths from breast cancer by up to one third,” said CBCF’s community relations coordinator, Amanda McNally. “To encourage women to book their free mammogram, visitors to the bus will be able to register online and within a few days receive a call back to set up an appointment at a local screening clinic or with a mobile unit when it is in their area.”
