Pitt Meadows Coun. David Murray was elected to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities executive board at the UBCM convention in Victoria last week.

There are 21 positions on the board, which represents municipal governments across the province, and Murray will serve as a representative for the Vancouver Metro Area for a one-year term.

He was voted in by approximately 200 the mayors and councillors from the cities and towns he will represent.

The board generally meets six times per year, for two days at a time, in Victoria.

“Transportation is going to be a big issue,” he said, and added that affordable housing and public safety are other issues that came up during the convention.

Murray was elected to Pitt Meadows Council in 2011, and has lived in the city since 1987.

He has had a 37-year career in municipal government, including 17 years with the City of Port Coquitlam parks department. He also ran his own business from 1989-2001 known as Tiger Sports Collectibles, with locations in Port Coquitlam and Maple Ridge.

The first meeting of the UBCM board will be in November.
