A vision for Newcastle Island is about to be revealed.
Snuneymuxw First Nation will launch its business plan and images of proposed development on the island, also called Saysutshun, during an invitation-only event Friday.
Erralyn Joseph, president of Petroglyph Development Group, said the board of directors, chief and council drafted and approved a business plan in October 2017 that provides a pathway and an answer for various priorities that have been brought up over the last few decades by the province or city around development of the island.
The vision, she said, is to bring the island back into the lives of Nanaimo residents and the Snuneymuxw people, and there are goals of educating people about the historical, natural and cultural importance of Saysutshun.
“We’re going to share a presentation that will set out various illustrations of the proposed development such as a welcome centre, adventure centre, a longhouse, additional camping and other proposed development with the public at large,” said Joseph.
“It’s really an opportunity to start that discussion on our shared vision for the island and really educating the public on the meaning of Saysutshun to the Snuneymuxw people, what its historical value is and its natural value.”
