On February 19, Fernie Alpine Resort announced that Polar Peak was officially open for the first time in the 2017/18 season.
Despite the cold, skiers, snowboarders, monoskiers and sit-skiers alike flocked to the lift. The lift opening was accompanied by a stunning bluebird day.
Because of the immense amount of snow, chairs were buried and out of view.
Resort workers struggled to uncover the lift from a challenging snow pack. According to the resort, the safety of their team and cat drivers is paramount.
The resort was excited to open what they consider one of the most stunning lifts in Fernie.
“(There are) few lifts like it in North America that go to a real mountain top with imposing walls on two sides and black diamond terrain on the other,” said Resorts of the Canadian Rockies VP of Sales and Marketing, Matt Mosteller.
To date this season, Fernie Alpine Resort has received over 27 feet of snow – the deepest in the region, and one of the deepest currently in North America.
Because of this, the resort is seeing much traffic flocking in from the United States to get a taste of the incredible powder.
“Flakes that make this place legendary!” said Mosteller.
