Violent crime figures show increase of 18 per cent over same period in 2019

Police in Keremeos were kept busy in the third quarter of 2020, according to statistics from the Penticton South Okanagan Similkameen Regional Detachment of the RCMP.

During the third quarter of this year, police received 579 calls for service, a 19 per cent increase from the 485 calls for service during the same time period in 2019.

There were 26 violent crime incidents, an 18 per cent increase from the 22 violent crime incidents in the third quarter of 2016.

These included seven assaults, three sex offences, 13 cases of uttering threats and four domestic violence incidents.

While the assaults and domestic violence incidents were down considerably from the third quarter of 2019, the number of cases of uttering threats showed an increase of 160 per cent.

Property crime figures in the third quarter of 2020 were close to the same as during the third quarter of 2019.

There were 71 incidents of property crimes, up from 70 in the third quarter of last year.

Mischief to property increased by 63 per cent, from 16 incidents in the third quarter of 2019 to 26 in the third quarter of this year.

Frauds were up by 900 per cent, with 10 incidents reported during the third quarter of this year, up from just one during the third quarter of last year.
