Police arrest suspect in Saanich bank robbery

Integrated Road Safety Unit members nab man after attempting to avoid roadblock on March 13

The Integrated Road Safety Unit on Thursday arrested the man believed to be responsible for an armed bank robbery earlier this month.

Saanich police were able to identify a suspect after released a high quality image from the March 3 robbery of the Bank of Montreal in the 3400-block of Cook St. On March 6, charges of robbery were sworn against Saanich resident Benjamin Lawrence Robert McDonald, and a Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest.

IRSU members conducting a roadblock around 11 p.m. on Gorge Road near Qu’Appelle Street Thursday (March 13) watched an approaching vehicle make a U-turn, which officers believed was an attempt to avoid being stopped.

An IRSU member followed the vehicle and pulled it over a short distance away on Harriet Road. The driver was identified as McDonald, and he was arrested on the outstanding warrant.
