POLICE BRIEFS: Break and enters, impaired driving, scammer

RCMP and Central Saanich Police news from the second week in November

Sidney North Saanich RCMP

• The Sidney North Saanich RCMP responded to 115 calls since Wednesday, Nov. 7.

Out of those calls they issued four, three-day immediate roadside prohibitions and three 90-day immediate roadside prohibitions.

• The RCMP is also reminding residents to write down serial numbers of any electronics or other items of value after a break, enter and theft was reported at a residence on Bessredge Place in Sidney on Nov. 13.

Central Saanich Police Service

• Central Saanich police responded to a call of a hit and run reported at the intersection of Sayward Road and the Pat Bay Highway around 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 7.

The driver of a blue Chevrolet pickup truck had collided with another vehicle at the intersection and kept driving northbound.

Police caught up with the vehicle at a gas station on the highway and discovered the 68-year-old female driver from Saltspring Island displayed signs of intoxication.

The woman failed two roadside screening tests and was issued a 90-day driving suspension and a 30-day vehicle impound. No charges were laid in the hit and run incident.

• Central Saanich police are warning local businesses of a liquor store scammer.

A white male, described as being in his mid 30s to early 40s, 5’8” tall and weighing around 165 pounds has been going into local liquor stores and picking items up off the shelf and then claiming he had purchased them when he hadn’t.

The fraudster then asks cashiers for cash refunds on the alcoholic beverages and in some cases claims the return has been authorized by a manager.

Incidents have been reported in both Central Saanich and Sidney.

• A report came from the staff at Keating Elementary School earlier this week that a number of wooden rounds had been stolen from their property.

The school purchased 50 cedar wood rounds in late September to kick-off the development of their naturescape exploratory play area.

Sometime over the Remembrance Day long weekend, 45 of the wood rounds were taken from the school property.

Central Saanich police ask anyone with any information on the theft contact them at 250-652-4441.
