Police confirm one fatality in Wednesday’s crash near Genelle

Three people were transported by ambulance to KBRH in serious condition

UPDATE: 3:10 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21

Sgt. Chad Badry from West Kootenay Traffic Services has confirmed one fatality resulting from an MVI near Genelle Wednesday afternoon.

Police report that upon attending the location, investigators determined that a 36-year-old female from Ootischenia was southbound (towards Trail) in a Honda Civic on Highway 22 when she crossed over the center line in a curve in the road. Her car slid sideways into an oncoming Chevrolet Ventura mini-van driven by a 24-year-old female from Salmo.

Sadly, the driver of the Honda Civic died at the scene.

The three occupants of the northbound (towards Castlegar) Chevrolet Ventura were taken to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.

The highway was shut down for about five hours to complete the investigation and clean-up the scene.

RCMP investigators and West Kootenay Traffic Services, in conjunction with the BC Coroners Service, will be working together to determine the cause of the collision.

UPDATE: 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20

Seven first responders from Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue were dispatched to a two-car motor vehicle incident near Genelle just after 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Captain Grant Tyson reported that two patients were extricated with the Jaws of Life and subsequently transported by ambulance to Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital.

The scene was located at Courtesy Road and Highway 22, Tyson reported the incident under control at 3 p.m.

The highway remains closed with a detour available through Genelle at 12th Avenue.

West Kootenay Traffic Services is continuing to investigate the accident.

DriveBC is reporting Highway 22 closed in both directions for vehicle incident near Genelle.

First responders were dispatched to a multi-vehicle accident near Genelle shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday.

The site is located on Highway 22 around Courtesy Road near Genelle.

Reports are coming in that it’s a multi-vehicle accident, with extrication required.

Police and ambulance on route.
