Vernon RCMP encountered what they are describing as a potentially dangerous situation.
On Saturday, officers responded to an abandoned 911 call in the 4200 block of Deroo Road and they approached a 31-year-old man in a home.
“He had a knife and a (fireplace) poker,” said Gord Molendyk, detachment spokesperson.
“It’s a case that could have turned out more seriously.”
The incident began when 911 operators received a call from the residence. A man allegedly explained that a child had accidently made the call but operators could hear a woman screaming in the background.
Once on scene, officers were faced with the man allegedly holding the kitchen knife and a poker and being aggressive.
“I spoke to our dog handler and he was in close proximity and had his service revolver ready,” said Molendyk. “But as soon as the knife was dropped, the dog was released.”
The dog was able to contain the suspect and he was taken into custody. He was treated for a puncture wound from the dog.
A psychiatric assessment has been requested and once that process is completed, charges of uttering threats and possessing a weapon could be considered.
“These are the confrontations we face more regularly,” said Molendyk of potential mental health issues.
The woman was not physically injured.
