Police shut down Lougheed Highway (Highway 7) around Mount Woodside Tuesday afternoon while they searched for a 24-year-old Agassiz man they believed had a firearm.
Just past 3 p.m., Agassiz RCMP responded to a complaint, staging along Lougheed Highway before initiating a search of the targeted property in the 2300 block with assistance by Chilliwack police, Fraser Valley Traffic Services, First Nations Policing, the LMD Emergency Response Team and Air Services.
Approximately six hours later the police successfully located and arrested the male without incident.
As officers contained the scene, investigators interviewed witnesses which led police to the suspect’s location in Chilliwack where at approximately 9:30 pm the man was safely taken into custody by police.
The arrest stemmed from a report made to the Agassiz RCMP of a man shooting a gun inside of a residence.
Few details are available as the investigation remains ongoing, with Agassiz General Investigation Section officers continuing to collect evidence.
“This complaint was high risk to both the public and police, therefore numerous resources were called into assist,” said Sgt. Darren Rennie of the Agassiz RCMP. “The coordinated efforts of several units saw this matter resolved peacefully with no one hurt. I would like to thank the public for their patience while the search was underway and the highway was closed.”
