Police incident in Thornhill ends

Man apparently taken into custody, gas supply being restored

A STAND off in Thornhill which resulted in the residents of several streets being evacuated has ended.

RCMP officers moved in on a Mountainview Ave. residence in lower Thornhill earlier this evening.

There are reports one man has been taken into custody.

“The are is safe and residents in the area can return home,” a brief police statement earlier this evening stated.

The incident, part of what police have called an ongoing investigation, took hold this morning when police at first asked people to stay away from Mountainview, one of a collection of streets off to the right of Old Lakelse Lake Road right before Old Lakelse Lake Road winds up to upper Thornhill.

And for residents still within the area taking in Mountainview as well as Crescentview, Sande and Toynbee, police asked them to stay inside and to lock their doors.

Police then surrounded a residence.

But in early afternoon, worried about the prospects of a gas leak at the residence, police then evacuated those within their homes to safety behind police lines.

Gas utility Pacific Northern Gas was called in to shut off the natural gas supply in the area.

Approximately 50 homes were within the evacuation area.

Police said this evening that the gas supply is to be restored shortly.

By mid afternoon, school officials were keeping students who lived in the area in school until they could be picked up by their parents or guardians.
