Police issue bike theft warning

More than 22 bicycles stolen in the Parksville area over the past month

Police report there has been an alarming increase in bicycle thefts in the past month in the Parksville area.

Oceanside RCMP Corporal Jesse Foreman reported there have been 22 bicycles reported stolen in Parksville in the month of August.

“This is alarming when you compare the statistics from the same month a year ago when there were only five stolen,” he said.

After speaking with the owner of a local bicycle shop, Cpl. Foreman believes there have been additional bikes stolen and not reported to police.

It would appear that there are one or more thieves in the area that are targeting bicycles and high-end jogging strollers.

“Many of these bicycles and strollers were left unlocked in the carport or next to a home,” he said. “Please protect your bicycle, attend a local bicycle shop and purchase a good quality lock or leave your bicycles and strollers secured in your residence.”

If you have any information regarding these thefts, please call the Oceanside RCMP @ (250) 248-6111 or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers @ 1 800-222-8477.
