A rainy forecast for Halloween on Monday (Oct. 31) could curtail some of the problems the occasion can bring, but Sooke RCMP will still be prepared for a big caseload.
“Our members will be out for the safety of the trick or treaters,” said Staff Sgt. Jeff McArthur, noting there will be extra patrols and officers keeping a sharp eye on the streets.
In past Halloween nights, there has been mischief, and fireworks are always seized.
Only those holding a permit are allowed to fire fireworks.
Fireworks restrictions began to gain traction several years ago in response to complaints and fireworks-related injuries.
“We hope people will use fireworks appropriately,” said assistant fire chief Matt Barney.
“It’s the people walking around in the community and start firing them off randomly that’s a concern.”
Sooke Fire Rescue has responded to few calls on Halloween night over the last several years, Barney said, and he doesn’t see that changing this year.
