100 Mile House RCMP deal with several motor vehicle issues

  • Dec. 22, 2016 5:00 a.m.

100 Mile House RCMP responded to 59 calls for service during the past week. Some highlights are as follows:

Roadside checks

On Dec. 18, Cariboo Traffic Services and Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement conducted a roadside check stop on Highway 97 in 100 Mile House.

As a result, four motorists of both passenger and commercial vehicles were issued violation tickets for using cell phones while driving, and four were issued violation tickets for not wearing seat belts.

Hit and fled

On Dec. 18, 100 Mile House RCMP were called to a motor vehicle incident (MVI) on the 200 block of Dogwood Avenue.

It was determined that a vehicle had struck a garbage container and a hydro pole and then purposely left the scene.

The vehicle involved was located at an address in the area. The owner of the vehicle was issued a violation ticket for failing to remain at the scene of an accident with property damage.

Refused breath demand

On Dec. 17, RCMP stopped a vehicle on the 300 block of Highway 97.

Members spoke with the male driver who displayed symptoms of alcohol consumption. He was issued a roadside breath demand, but refused to provide a breath sample.

The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition (IRP) and the vehicle he was operating was impounded for 30 days.

Slippery roads

On Dec. 17, police were called to a report of a single-vehicle MVI on Highway 97 on the train overpass near Ainsworth Road.

A truck towing a trailer had been travelling north bound when it lost control on the overpass striking the concrete barrier before going off the road to the left.

The occupants of the vehicle were not injured, but there was extensive damage to the vehicle and trailer.

Road conditions were slippery at the time and it is believed speed relative to the conditions of the road were also a factor.

MVI causes injuries

On Dec. 16, RCMP were called to a two-vehicle MVI on the 300 block of Birch Avenue.

It was determined that a vehicle turning onto Birch Avenue from a parking lot failed to yield to an oncoming vehicle travelling on Birch Avenue and caused a collision.

The driver of the vehicle driving on Birch Avenue suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to 100 Mile District General Hospital by an ambulance crew for further treatment.

Failed reading

On Dec. 16, police were called to a report of single vehicle MVI on Highway 97 near the Exeter Truck Route.

It was determined the vehicle was travelling on Canim Hendrix Lake Road and entered the intersection, hit a concrete meridian and traffic sign before crossing Highway 97, and came to rest in a turning lane. A member talked to the male driver and symptoms of alcohol consumption were observed. A roadside breath test was conducted, which resulted in a fail reading. He was detained for impaired driving and taken to the detachment for further testing, which resulted in breath samples being obtained that were over the legal limit of .08.

The 23-year-old 100 Mile House resident was released on a promise to appear for a later date. Charges of impaired driving and driving over .08 will be proposed.

Hit-and-run

On Dec. 15, RCMP received a complaint of a hit-and-run that occurred in a parking lot on the 100 block of Birch Avenue.

A parked Ford Explorer received damage from an unknown vehicle that was likely backing up at the time.

Based on the damage the driver was likely aware of the incident and did not remain at the scene.
