Video footage from a driver who recorded himself as he sped up and down Sumas Mountain is now being reviewed by the Abbotsford Police Department.
Const. Ian MacDonald said the video links and tips from the public have all been forwarded to the traffic section for consideration.
The footage, over eight minutes long, was recorded Jan. 1 using a GoPro camera and posted to YouTube by a user called TheStiggyOne. The driver cannot be seen in the footage.
The video begins as the vehicle leaves from Clayburn Village on Clayburn Road, west of Highway 11. The driver then branches off at Straiton Road, and travels the route up Sumas Mountain and down the other side to the small community of Kilgard.
The speed limit along the route is 50 km/h, but MacDonald said the driver is travelling at “fairly high speeds” throughout the footage.
At one point, the driver passes another vehicle around a blind corner.
MacDonald said a primary concern is that on the day the footage was shot, road conditions were not ideal.
“We were dealing with situations where area residents were phoning us that day to report slippery conditions and black ice,” he said.
MacDonald said, at the very least, the driver will receive a warning from police.
However, officers are reviewing the 120 videos that were posted to the driver’s YouTube channel, from drives he recorded around the province, and potential fines or charges could be issued.
TheStiggyOne channel has since been closed, and the videos can no longer be viewed by the public.
