Police stop dog attack

Fort St. John RCMP interrupted two dogs that killed a cat and were attacking a couple in their home, causing serious injury.

Police likely saved the lives of a Fort St. John couple being attacked by a pair of dogs in their home on Christmas.

At 7:55 p.m. local time, the Fort St. John RCMP received a 911 call from a frantic female advising that two dogs had killed her cat and the dogs were now trying to kill her and her husband; then the call ended abruptly.

Officers immediately attended to a residence in the 9200 block of 82nd Avenue in Fort St John and found blood smears on the outside of the door. Officers entered the residence to find a 51-year-old woman  suffering from dog bites, but of greater concern, the other resident, a 66-year-old man was being brutally attacked by the dogs.

The man was seated in a chair and was non responsive and believed to be in shock from his serious injuries. The officers attempted to defuse the situation but were unsuccessful. Fearing that death would come to the man if the dogs were not stopped, one of the officers discharged their service pistol, striking the attacking dogs.

One of the dogs died immediately while the other escaped out onto the street with serious injuries. That dog was located and was humanely put down.

The woman was treated at local hospital while the man had to be air lifted out due to the seriousness of his injuries.

This investigation is still ongoing while police are still attempting to piece together what led up to the attack and are asking anyone with information to contact them at 250-787-8140.
