A report of someone carrying a knife on a bus in South Surrey Tuesday afternoon turned out to be a false alarm – but not before it drew a large contingent of police officers to the scene.
Multiple RCMP cruisers converged on the TransLink bus shortly after 1 p.m., at a bus stop at the intersection King George Boulevard and 32 Avenue.
As officers surrounded the bus, eyewitnesses reported seeing several people with their arms in the air. According to one witness on scene a man was taken into custody by police.
Cpl. Elenore Sturko said later in the afternoon, however, that the incident had been established as “an unfounded complaint” by investigating officers.
“People were detained during investigation of the situation, but they were released at the scene,” she said.
“We responded that way because we always take calls like that seriously,” she added.
“We do our best to keep the public safe.”
