A man delivering newspapers to a customer in Maple Ridge is being credited for helping save a senior who had fallen in her home.
Police were called to the property on Reid Avenue just before noon Tuesday after the man noticed several newspapers lying on the doorstep of the house.
Cpl. Alanna Dunlop said the man found that odd.
When police arrived, they found a neighbour who had a key to the home.
Upon entering, police found the owner, an elderly woman, had fallen and was in medical distress. She was taken to hospital.
Wire theft
A man was arrested by police early Tuesday for stealing copper wire from a Maple Ridge property.
Ridge Meadows RCMP were alerted to the theft around 3:40 a.m. after two suspicious men were seen Engineer’s Training on 256th Street. When police arrived they found a large section of wire in the area, along with two bicycles.
A 48-year-old man was found nearby and arrested.
A police dog was brought in, but unable to find the second suspect.
Wanted
A 40-year-old man wanted on a warrant was arrested by police Monday after stealing from the Real Canadian Superstore in Pitt Meadows.
A loss prevention officer saw the man stealing meat and approached him, but he pulled out a spray canister and threatened to use it.
The officer managed to knock the canister out of the man’s grasp, but he ran off with stolen items. Police later found him at a bus stop.
B&Es
Ridge Meadows RCMP are investigating a pair of break-and-enters that targeted homes in Maple Ridge on Monday.
The first break-in happened sometime between 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. at a house on 101A Avenue.
Thieves entered the garage by forcing the door open and then entered the home by removing a basement door lock.
A 46-inch flat screen television, high definition cable box, 15 horse power outboard boat motor, fishing gear, a table saw and a mitre saw were stolen.
The second break-in happened between 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Thieves found a spare key outside the house on Lougheed Highway.
A cellular phone, a netbook computer, jar of coins and some prescription medication were stolen.
Car crash
A medical condition is being blamed for a crash in Maple Ridge Monday morning that sent one driver to hospital.
Police said a small pickup truck slammed into the back of a flat-bed truck that was stopped at a traffic light on Dewdney Trunk Road at Cottonwood Street around 11:50 a.m.
The crash pushed the truck 200 metres down the road.
The driver from the smaller pickup was taken to hospital by the B.C. Ambulance Service.
“Doctors feel that the injured driver had suffered some sort of medical seizure prior to the crash and that the medical condition would be the major contributing factor,” said Cpl. Alanna Dunlop.
Police will be following up with the B.C. Motor Vehicle Branch on the man’s ability to continue driving.
