Richmond RCMP are investigating six robberies from the last month in which women had their purses snatched from them.
The detachment says in five of the incidents the suspect was described as a masked man, dressed in dark clothing.
Four of the robberies happened in Central Richmond, while the other two were in the Steveston area. All six happened between Feb. 22 and March 23.
RCMP say it’s not yet known whether the same person is behind each crime, but are warning people to be more aware of their surroundings. The detachment says it’s important that any other victims report their experiences.
Police suggest people take precautions by staying alert while in public and taking note of people or businesses in the area who could help them if they need it. Police say if a robber tries to steal someone’s purse they should throw the item away in one direction and run in the other. Paying attention to detail is also critical, police say. Remembering details of an attacker’s appearance can help police find out who they are.
The Richmond detachment says anyone who has a similar experience should call 911 as soon as they are in a safe place.
