Police are warning members of the public to be aware of a bear roaming a rural part of the community.

“Saanich residents are encouraged to not approach these animals and report any sightings within the Saanich Municipality to ensure the public’s safety,” Cst. DJ Swanstrom said in a release.

Residents living in 3900 block of West Saanich Road and 5800 block of Wallace Drive reported seeing a large black bear hanging around their properties and rummaging their garbage throughout Sunday evening.

Residents informed police that the bear appeared to be comfortable around people and had been wandering across their properties all day. The bear was not present when police attended.
