Break-ins at homes and businesses in Abbotsford are down, but police are reporting that they are up considerably when it comes to sheds and outbuildings.
Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said residential break-ins have dropped 26 per cent, while businesses have recorded a 23 per cent reduction.
But break-ins to outbuildings are up 52 per cent.
Const. Ian MacDonald said the bulk of the increase is in the Sumas Prairie area, and it appears the thieves are mainly targeting wire and metal.
In their search, they are also stealing items such as wakeboards, ATVs and tools.
MacDonald said Sumas Prairie is likely being targeted because of its easy access to Highway 1 or because the culprit or culprits live nearby.
Police are reminding residents to securely lock outbuildings on their properties.
