Pool opening further delayed

A deficiency in the tile works has setback its completion, city says

The Terrace and District Aquatic Centre pool opening has been delayed further.

City staff have identified a deficiency in the tile works around the main pool that causes water to continually seep into the gutter through the tile as it goes back to the filter system. It’s likely that the tile cannot be reused and new material will be ordered in, according to the city.

“[We] are disappointed in this finding when working towards substantial completion, and the City cannot respectfully accept the facility back into possession for operation,” said a city spokesperson in a press release.

It went on to say that the project is still on budget, and the city’s project team is working with the prime contractor, Viking Construction, to rectify the issue.

City spokesperson Karisa Petho said staff will keep the public updated on timelines and a potential opening date as they know more.

“We want to make sure repairs happen as efficiently as possible lining up with the availability of materials and trades staff to complete the repair.”

Viking Construction’s main contractor for the project Jeff Skuggedal said they will be using the same subcontractor to do the tile repair work and they are awaiting a schedule from them on when new materials will arrive.

While the tile is being fixed, the city said crews will be working on other areas of the facility that need finishing touches to make sure the centre is fully complete when opened.
