Popkum firefighters had their hands full Thursday afternoon, preventing a car fire from igniting nearby gas pumps.

A convertible red Ford Mustang caught fire at the Esso located next to the roundabout as you head towards Agassiz off the freeway. The vehicle was fully ablaze when the fire crews arrived, and it was just 10 metres away from the bank of pumps.

Working quickly, they got the fire under control before any damage could be done. The car is a total writeoff and a vehicle parked right next to it likely sustained heat damage, but there were no injuries.

Staff from the Esso were shaken after the fire given the possible danger of having gas pumps nearby.

The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known, but the owner of the car was heard on the phone blaming faulty wiring.
