Agassiz RCMP have made an arrest in connection to a number of break and enters in Popkum.
Since November the community has been the target of a multiple residential break-ins, leading the Agassiz RCMP to execute an operational plan to locate, arrest and charge those responsible.
“The large number of break-ins and thefts became a community and police priority”, said Sgt. Darren Rennie. “We had a team of police officers in Popkum ensuring whoever was going to enter the community to commit crime were likely to be stopped and/or arrested.”
Rennie said the plan came at a significant cost, but was fruitful when an adult male suspect was arrested.
Herbert Hanuse, 27, of Rosedale was charged with break and enter and possession of break-in instruments. He remains in custody pending his next court appearance later this month.
RCMP remind residents to be proactive in protecting their properties from thieves.
“Over the past few weeks our members were walking the streets of Popkum, Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs and observed several high value items insecure,” said Rennie.
He recommends homeowners stow expensive items like grills, cars and bikes in the garage, and consider installing motion-sensor lighting to deter theft. Getting to know your neighbours and keeping yards free of toys, tools and ladders can also help to prevent theft.
