The Port Alberni RCMP is implementing a block watch program.

Alberni Valley residents who are interested in making a difference in their neighbourhoods, by helping to reduce property crime, are encouraged to become members of the Block Watch Program; a new initiative by the Port Alberni RCMP.

The Port Alberni detachment will be implementing the new crime prevention program that is aimed at home owners to reduce property crime and to improve public/police relations, over the next couple of weeks.

The Block Watch Program can empower citizens to take an active role in their community by uniting with their neighbours and with the local police to report criminal and suspicious activity.

Devin Cusson, intern with the Port Alberni RCMP, said members of the Block Watch Program receive many personal benefits, including discounts on home insurance premiums through some carriers, increased personal safety and increased safety and protection of personal property.

Volunteers with the RCMP will be canvasing neighbourhoods in the next couple of weeks notifying residents about the Block Watch Programs.
